Large, old cork oak with the broad, open crown typical of the species when grown in the open, without competition from other trees.

Quercus suber:
Evergreen Mediterranean oak, up to 25 m tall and living over 200 years, prized for its thick, corky bark. It is the backbone of the Portuguese montado — an open agro-silvo-pastoral woodland — and the only tree whose cork is harvested sustainably, stripped from the living trunk without felling: first at around 25 years of age, then roughly every nine years thereafter. Cork oak forests are one of the major plant communities of the western Mediterranean; the species is Portugal's national tree.
